This is a front view of the engine. The engine is fresh off my highly calibrated bathroom scale and according to it the engine weighs 87 lbs in this picture. The magneto weighs 2.75 lbs which I will be removing and replacing with a LeBurg alternator which weighs 4.4 lbs. I am a bit worried about weight on my engine. Scott Casler's 1/2 VW Engine weighs about 90 lbs, I think. This is the engine that Hummel recommends. I think I can come within 3 lbs. of the 1/2 VW and still have electric on the engine. I will know for sure when I get farther along in this project. I'll keep track of weights as I go and will update on this page.

I am very fortunate to live in San Fernando Valley, as I am a short distance from some very hi-tech fab shops. If I have to I can get titanium parts built for this engine, such as mounts and landing gears, that sort of thing. I will end up designing, or having designed, motor mounts for it as the Ultracruiser is designed for a bed mount. This engine is designed for a regular aircraft engine mount. I have contacted Morrey Hummel about an aircraft engine mount and he recommended that I contact Scott Casler, which I did. Scott informed me that he could weld bedmounts to the engine case. I don't think that is a practical solution, as the engine would have to be torn down, shipped to Scott Casler, and then shipped back to me and reassembled. It would make my engine heavier and make Scott some money. I have nothing against Scott making money, I hope he does, but I don't think that it's a good answer for this type of situation. I have a friend who is building a Hummel Bird and, with his help, I think aircraft type mounts can be made for this engine.
