With the holidays fast approaching and a lot of tutorials
appearing for Christmas ornaments I thought what better ornament for
me to make than one of a Moon. This tutorial uses one selection that
can easily be done using Vectors if you so choose. We will also be
using several PSP tools including draw, freehand, deformation and
cutout along with preset shapes, inner bevel, cutout, drop shadow
and the wave in geometric effects. I do use Eye Candy 4000 for the
fur, but I am sure you can find something similar in PSP's fur or
Eye Candy 3. I personally preferred the effect from EC4.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04
and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate
level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments
in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
Eye Candy 4000 ~~ You can purchase it HERE
My Gold Pattern ~~ You can download it HERE
**unzip into your PSP Patterns Folder
My Selection ~~ You can download it HERE
** Unzip into your selections folder. If you do not have
a selections folder then create one in either PSP or a separate folder
called Selections on your hard drive.
Step 1:
Open a new image 400 x 400, 16 million colors, transparent background.
This will give you lots of room to work and we can resize your
ornament later.
Step 2:
Add a new layer and name it moon. Go to Selections-->Load from
Disk and navigate to your md-moon selection and click open. If you
prefer to create your own moon using vectors I used the crescent shaped
moon in the preset shapes and added a lot of nodes and maneuvered
them around to make bumps.

Set your foreground color to white. Go to Selections-->Modify-->Expand
and enter the number 2. Flood fill your selection and keep it selected.
Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel and apply the following inner
bevel and keep it selected:

Step 3:
Go to Selections-->Select All (Ctrl+A), Selections-->Float (Ctrl+F),
Go to Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply the following cutout:

Deselect and Save.
Step 4:
Pick up your freehand tool
set at freehand and draw around the top of your moon as shown below.
This is going to be your hat.

Step 5:
Change your foreground color to red (I used #C00000), Click on the
hat to select it and flood fill the top part of your moon, keep selected.
Go to Selections-->Promote to Layer and deselect. Rename this layer
hat and save.
Step 6:
Go to Selections-->Select All (Ctrl+A) and Selections-->Float
(Ctrl+F). Go to Effects-->Plugins-->EyeCandy4000-->Fur choose
Stubble Inside for the selection and apply these settings. Don't forget
to change the hair color to the same red as your foreground color.

Keep selected and add a cutout but change the Vertical
Offset to Minus 4 and the Horizontal Offset to Plus 4. Deselect and
Save.
Step 7:
Add a new layer and name it trim. Change your foreground color to
green (I used #0B8F0B) and make your background color Null. Pick up
your draw tool
set at
Freehand width 15, Antialias Checked and Create as Vector Unchecked.

Draw a line across where your hat and moon meet to
make a trim. Select All and Float and apply the Eye Candy fur but
change the hair color to green, apply the same cutout as in the previous
step. Deselect and Save.

**Note: At this point you may want to use the deformation
tool to shape your trim to fit around the hat a little better. I held
down the shift key and pushed in the upper left node a little to shape
it.

Step 8:
Now let's add a ball, or tassel, to the end of your hat. Add a new
layer and name it tassel. Go to your preset shapes and choose the
Dodecagon shape. Make your foreground color null and your background
color white and make a ball at the tip of your hat. Select All and
Float and once again apply your EyeCandy fur and change the hair color
to white. Apply the same cutout and then reapply it, but change the
vertical to plus 4 and the horizontal to minus 4. Keep Selected and
add the following Drop Shadow (Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow):

Deselect and Save.
Step 9:
Hide Layer 1 and the Moon layer (click on the eyeglasses on your layer
palette and they will have a big red X on the layers), make sure you
are on the top layer and go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible
and rename your layer Hat. Save.
Step 10:
We must give our moon some character so let's add a face. Add a new
layer and name it eyes. Keep your foreground color at Null and change
your background color to Black. Change your preset shape to ellipse
and draw an oval for your eye. Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel
and apply the Round Preset, but change the angle to 63. Go to Edit-->Copy
(Ctrl+C) to copy your eye and then Edit-->Paste-->As New Selection
(Ctrl+E) and place it next your first eye. Apply the following Drop
Shadow:

Step 11:
Add a new layer and name it Nose. Change your background color to
your red and draw a nose under your eyes. Apply the following Inner
Bevel, the same drop shadow as above and save.

Step 12:
Add a new layer and name it mouth. Change your background color back
to black and pick up your draw tool, still set at freehand and draw
a U for the mouth. Because we have the background color set and not
the foreground it will fill in the mouth. Apply the Round Preset Inner
Bevel again, but change the Angle to 348 and the Elevation to 64.
Save. This is what my face looks like.

Step 13:
Let's add some hearts dangling around the lower part of the moon.
Add a new layer and name it lower loop. Change your foreground to
black and your background to null. Pick up your draw tool and change
the width to 1. Draw a line up in front of the moon, stopping just
before the top white and draw another line below so it looks similar
to this:

It looks like the loop is drawn behind the moon doesn't
it? Save. Change your foreground to Null and your background to your
green color (#0B8F0B).
Step 14:
Add a new layer and name it heart1. Change your preset shape to a
heart. I used the Heart1 shape, of course you can use a star shape
or any other that you would like. Draw out your heart and using your
deformation tool rotate it and place it so it looks like it is attached
to the bottom of the left string. Apply the following Inner Bevel.

Step 14:
Add a new layer and name it heart2. Change your background color to
red (#C00000) and draw a heart on your other string, using the deformation
tool to position it and applying the same inner bevel. Save.

Step 15:
If you would like a little face on your hearts, add a new layer and
name it heartfaces. Change your background color to null, your foreground
color to black. Pick up your draw tool and draw 2 little eyes and
a mouth on each of your hearts.
Step 16:
Hide layer1 and go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible to merge
your remaining layers. Save.
You now have your Christmas Moon. You can either
leave him as is and tube him to use on cards, sigtags, or gift tags
or you can continue on and make an ornament. Of course you can always
do both *grin*. Let's continue on and make him into an ornament.
Step 17:
Make sure your merged layer is active and go to Layers-->Resize
and resize him 90%. Make sure the all layers is UNchecked. Pick up
your selection tool
set
it at Circle.

Draw a small circle towards the top of your hat where
you want the ornament string to come through and press delete. Keep
selected and apply the following cutout.

Deselect and Save.
Step 18:
Add a new layer and name it upper loop. Set your background color
to null and your foreground to patterns. Choose the gold pattern that
you unzipped earlier with these settings:

Pick up your draw tool and set the width to 5. Draw
a loop from your hole up and around ~~ like this:

Step 19:
Go to Effects-->Geometric Effects-->Wave and apply these
settings:
We now have our Christmas Moon Ornament. Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge
visible to merge your two layers together. Pick up your crop tool
and draw a rectangle
around your ornament like this:

Go to tool options and crop image. You can now resize
him 75% and tube him or put on a background and frame him.
I cropped this one without the ornament and optimized
it as a gif and will be using him as a sigtag.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as
