This is my creation, any similarity to other
tutorials (except where stated for permitted PSP
versions of third-party tutorials) on the Internet
is unintentional.
Please do not copy or place
this tutorial or any graphics to any other place
without written permission directly from me. Thank
you.
This tutorial is written thanks
to Blaze, who has posted his results and how he
achieved these results in several PSP Newsgroups.
Blaze has allowed me permission to create a tutorial
using his technique along with my own, so I guess
this is a collaboration tutorial ~smiles~. Unfortunately,
Blaze does not have a website of his own so I can't
link to him.
We will be using only PSP7 Effects
including blend modes, artistic brush and textures.
My tutorials are only guidelines to
help you accomplish a certain creation. Please feel
free to be inventive and take whatever liberties
you would like. I encourage each of you to do your
"own thing" and make your creation yours!
Your finished creation is yours to do with as you
please.
Screenshots are resized and compressed
for faster loading. Don't forget to SAVE your work
often.
This tutorial is written in and for
PSP Version 7.04 and assumes you have a working
knowledge of PSP at a beginners level. I am sure
this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few
adjustments in paths but I have only used Version
7 so I can't make promises *S*
FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
A Graphic ~~ Colorful pictures seem to work out
better. I am using a Purple Flower that my friend
Terri took in her backyard last Spring. Terri is
an excellent tutorial writer as well. You can visit
Terri's site HERE.
If you use this graphic, please right click and
save to your hard drive.

Step 1:
Open your graphic in PSP and make a copy of it
(Shift+D). The main reason for making a copy is
in case I want to use the image again and forget
to change the name when I save *S* You can close
out your original graphic. Remember to save often.
Step 2:
Go to Layers-->Duplicate. Right click on your
Copy of Background layer and rename the layer Detail.
Change your blend mode to darken. You will find
the blend mode on your layer palette on the far
right side. Click where it says normal to get the
drop down list. Your layer palette should now look
like this.

Step 3:
Activate your background layer. Go to Layers-->Add
New Raster Layer. BEFORE clicking OK, name your
layer Surface and change the blend mode to Multiply.

Step 4:
Hide your Detail and Background layers by going
to your layer palette and clicking on the eye glasses
next to the name. A red X will appear and you will
only have your transparent surface layer showing.
Your layer palette should look like this.

Step 5:
Change your foreground styles color to a beige.
I used #DCD5C6. Flood fill your surface layer. Go
to Effects-->Texture Effects-->Textures and
apply the following settings. The texture I used
is called lines.bmp and is number 37 in my drop
down menu, however your number may be different
depending on the amount of textures you have in
your folder.

Step 6:
Activate your Background layer and make it visible,
there should be no red X on the eyeglasses now.
Your graphic should now look like it has the texture
from your surface layer. Here is how mine looked.
It isn't a large difference and, of course, you
can always change the texture if you aren't satisfied
with the way it looks.

Step 7:
Now to make the painting. With your background layer
active, go to Effects-->Artistic Effect-->Brush
Strokes. I chose the Watercolor preset and used
the default settings. You can change the settings
or use another one of the presets if you like, remember
this is YOUR creation. ;-) Here is how mine looked
after applying the brush settings. I hope you have
been saving!

Step 8:
You may like your graphic as it stands, with the
detail layer still hidden. Let's activate your Detail
layer to unhide it. See how the detail shows through?
You can adjust the layer blend mode to get more
or less detail. Here's how mine looked changing
the blend mode to Color.

Add a frame or a border and just
have fun! Don't forget to resize your graphic to
your groups specification before sending it in.
Here is another one that I did keeping the detail
blend mode at Darken.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial
as much as I did creating it for you. I
would like to thank my testers from my PSP_Dynasty
group.
