This tutorial is basically a learning tutorial on what you can do with the Ulead Art Texture FREE filter.

One of my favorite filters is the Ulead Art Texture. It is wonderful for using on borders for frames, and I think that is what most of us use if for. I have been doing some experimenting with this filter and you would be amazed at some of the wonderful things that you can create using this free filter. I have a couple of tutorials in mind using this filter and thought maybe I should write one just on the basics. This tutorial will also be using a lot of screenshots and I have resized them so the loading time will be cut down.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*

You will need:

JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
ULead's Art Texture - You can get the free version HERE
**When executing the setup the program will look for Photoshop on your computer to install Art Texture. Click on the Browse button and navigate to your PSP PLUGINS FOLDER and install Art Texture there. If you don't do this the program will not work properly for you.

Are you ready to start learning and playing with the Ulead Art Texture filter? Then let's get started! Open up a new image 200x200, 16 million colors, transparent background and flood fill with any color.

One thing that I like about Ulead is that you don't need to remember to have your flood color white to have it work effectively, you can use any color you want and your results will be the same.

This filter is great for creating a new backgrounds, filling in a Dingbat, preset shape or brush, and of course adding it as a border for a frame.

When you first open your Ulead Art Texture filter (Effects-->Plugins-->Ulead-->Art Texture) this screen will pop up.

As you can see I have several items circled and we will go over the Edit, Load Library, and Advanced settings.

Let's start with Edit. When you press edit you will get this screen which will give you several gradient choices for you to use.

I think the most common one that is used is Number 5 Gold and that one is mainly used for borders. Scroll down and you will see a variety of gradients to use. I have selected #28 which is a coppery gradient. The bottom of the row shows you the different effects for that particular gradient and helps you decide if this is the one for your needs. When you have decided which gradient you want to use click OK and you will receive this screen.

The 6 patterns that were at the bottom of the previous screen are now here for you to choose from. Select the one you would like to work with (it will have a blue border around it) and click OK. I applied it to a preset shape and this is what it looked like.

Load Library option

When you open the Load Library option you will find another vast variety of patterns to use. Again, either for borders or filling in presets. Here are just a few of the examples you have to choose from.

I selected Pattern-9 and when I hit OK I had that pattern and 5 more to select from.

For fun I selected the third one on the top row, applied it to my preset shape and put an inner bevel to it. Below is my result.

Advanced Option

When you click on the advanced button you receive even more pattern templates to choose from and when you click one of those on you receive 6 more pattern samples to choose from.

You can see which ones I chose and this is the result on a 200x200 image. Can you see the possibilities for backgrounds here? **grin**

More on the Edit option

You thought I was done with the edit option didn't you? There is something else that you can do while in the edit option and that is playing around with the repeat numbers. You can change that number from .01 up to 5.0. The default is set at 1.0 and I have one setting at .50 and one at 3.25. You can see the differences below:

Upon applying them to a 200x200 image the differences were remarkable.

set at .50

set at 3.25

Don't be shy ~~ play around with the different options and settings that your filters allow you to do. The possibilities of what you can do with them are endless. Adding Inner Bevels, Drop Shadows, other filters only enhance what you already have created.

Here's one that I used on a Dingbat.

I do hope that I have helped you understand a little more of just what you can do with the Ulead Art Texture Filter. I have several more tutorials coming up that will be using this filter and they will refer back to this basic tutorial.
