The Teddy Bear, one of the world's most beloved icons, celebrates his 100th birthday this year! To honor his birthday, I have created this tutorial for you to also honor him. I realize that there are several teddy bear tutorials on the Internet, but I feel that this tutorial is unique. I don't use selections nor do I use any vectors. You will be making your own Ted E. Bear using JASC's Preset Shapes, Motion Blur, Eye Candy 4000 Jiggle, and you will be using the deformation tool a lot. The deformation tool is wonderful for rotating and resizing your creation to just the way you want him to look. *smiles*

My tutorials are only guidelines to help you accomplish a certain creation. Please feel free to be inventive and take whatever liberties you would like. I encourage each of you to do your "own thing" and make your creation yours! Your finished creation is yours to do with as you please.

Screenshots are resized and compressed for faster loading. Don't forget to SAVE your work often.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate-advanced level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*

FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
Hood's Hairball Tube ~~ You can download it HERE

Eye Candy 4000 ~~ You can purchase it HERE Unfortunately the jiggle option does not come with the demo version. If you have Eye Candy 3 you can explore the settings in EC3 jiggle to try to come up with something similar.

Step 1:
Open a new image 400x500, 16 million colors, transparent background. You want to have plenty of room to work with and will be resizing your finished creation before you are finished. Set your foreground color to Null and your background color to a flesh color. I used #D4B290.

Add a new layer, name it head. Activate your Preset Shapes, set at Ellipse, antialias checked, retain style and create as vector unchecked. Towards the top, center of your work area, draw out a shape for his head.

Step 2:
Go to Selections-->Select All (Ctrl+A). Selections-->Float. Activate your picture tube tool and navigate to your hairball tube.

Dab your hairball all around your floating section to completely cover it. Depending on the pressure you apply to your mouse, your hairball be lighter or darker.

Keep selected. Go to Blur-->Motion Blur and apply the following settings:

(Angle 90; Pixels 15)

Deselect and save.

Step 3:
Go to Plugins-->Effects-->Eye Candy 4000--->Jiggle. Apply the following settings:

(Seamless tile checked)

Remember these steps, as we will be doing the same thing for each main body part.

At this point you can colorize your bear using one of several tools available in PSP. Here are a few examples. Go to Colors-->Adjust-->Hue/Saturation/Lightness you can use the sliders for changing the color.

Colors-->Adjust-->Brightness/Contrast

Effects-->Enhance Photo-->Manual Color Correction

The possibilities are endless. Your Ted E. Bear will be uniquely yours! Remember, if you do decide to colorize your bear, you will have to do this with each step.

Step 4:
On your layer palette, activate layer1. Add a new layer and name it ear. Using your preset shapes, ellipse, draw out an ear. Similar to what I have below:

Select All, Float, Apply your hairball tube. Apply your Motion Blur and deselect. Apply your EC4 Jiggle and save.

Step 5:
Add a new layer, name it inner ear. Draw out a small oval on the lower part of your ear.

Go to Blur-->Gaussian Blur and apply a blur of 1.5.

Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow and apply the following settings.

(Vertical Offset=2; Horizontal Offset =4; Opacity=53; Blur=5.7)

Reapply your drop shadow, but this time change the Vertical Offset to Minus 2 and the Horizontal Offset to Minus 4. Save.

Step 6:
Activate your layer palette. Hide your head layer and layer1 by clicking on the eyeglasses. A red X will appear. Make sure you on one of the ear layers. Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible. Rename this layer ear1. Go to Layers-->Duplicate. Go to Image-->Mirror. If necessary, use your mover tool to play the copy of your ear into place. Open your closed layers by going to Layers-->View-->All. Save. This is how my Ted E. Bear looks at this point.

Step 7:
While on the copy of ear1, add a new layer. Name it body. (This layer should be under the head layer) Draw out how you want your body to look.

Select All, Float, Apply your hairball tube. Apply your Motion Blur and deselect. Apply your EC4 Jiggle and save. Don't forget to colorize, if this is what you have chosen to do.

I wanted to make his tummy appear a little fuller so I added a cutout. Go to Selections-->Select All. Selections-->Float. Go to Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply the following settings.

(Offsets=3; Opacity=59; Blur=15.5)

Reapply the cutout, but this time change the offsets to Minus 3.

Step 8:
Activate your layer palette. Under your body layer, add a new layer. Name it arm. Draw out an oval on the right side of your body.

Select All, Float, Apply your hairball tube. Apply your Motion Blur and deselect. Apply your EC4 Jiggle and save. Activate your deformation tool . Rotate your arm to the left, until you are happy with the way it looks. You can use the deformation tool or mover tool at any time if you aren't happy with the position. This is another reason for having a number of layers. You can manipulate the different parts at any time.

Step 9:
Add a new layer, name it hand. Draw out an oval for your hand on top of your arm.

Select All, Float, Apply your hairball tube. I used a little extra pressure on the tube to make the hairball a little darker. Apply your Motion Blur and deselect. Apply your EC4 Jiggle and save.

Step 10:
Add a new layer and name it pad. Draw out an oval on top of your hand. Go to Blur-->Gaussian Blur and apply the same 1.5 blur setting as before. Save.

Step 11:
On your layer palette, close out all layers except your arm, hand and pad layers. Make sure you are on the arm layer and merge visible. (layers-->merge-->merge visible). Rename your layer arm1. Open all layers and save.

Step 12:
Duplicate your arm1 layer. Go to Image-->Mirror. Use your mover tool to move your arm into place.

Step 13:
It is now time to add some legs to Ted E. Bear. We are going to cheat big time here. *grin* Activate your arm1 layer. Go to Edit-->Copy (Ctrl+C) Edit-->Paste-->As A New Layer (Ctrl+L). Use your mover tool to move the leg into position under your body.

That worked out kind of neat didn't' it? LOL Rename the layer leg1. Duplicate your leg1 layer. Go to Images--Mirror. Use your move tool to move into place.

I do think that Mr. Ted E. Bear is shaping up quite nicely. You have been saving haven't you?

Step 14:
Now it is time to fix up his face. On your layer palette, activate your head layer. Add a new layer and name it muzzle. Using your preset shapes ellipse, draw a muzzle on his head. It doesn't matter if you make it too narrow or wide, you can use the deformation tool to fix it later.

Select All, Float, Apply your hairball tube. Do NOT apply your Motion Blur. Deselect. Apply your EC4 Jiggle and save. Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow and apply the following settings:

(Offsets=0; Opacity=78; Blur=25.9)

Step 15:
Add a new layer, name it nose. Change your background color to black, keeping your foreground to null. Using your presets ellipse, draw out a nose on his muzzle. Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel. Apply JASC's Round preset, but change the angle to 177.

Step 16:
Add a new layer, name it mouth. Toggle your foreground and background styles. Just click the double arrow to change your background color to foreground.

Pick up your draw tool, , set it to freehand - width = 2. Draw a line down from his nose and a line for his mouth. You can make him smile or frown *grin*, whatever you decide.

Step 17:
We are just about done, but Ted E. Bear wants to see all of the lovely PSP creations you have made. Let's give him a couple of eyes. Add a new layer, name it eye. Change your foreground color to Null, your background color to white. Using your preset shapes, set at Ellipse, draw out an oval for his eye.

Step 18:
Add a new layer, name it pupil. Change your background color to black and draw an oval for his pupil. Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel. Apply the Round preset, this time have the angle set at the default of 315. We want to merge the two eye layers together, but let's do it a little different this time. We have a number of layers on our bear. Instead of going to the layer palette and clicking all of the layers off, except the two eye layers, go to Layers-->View-->None. That will close all of your layers. Go to your layer palette and click on your eye layer and your pupil layer. Now you can merge your two layers visible. *smiles*. Go to Layers-->View-->All.

Step 19:
Duplicate your newly merged layer. Go to Image-->Mirror. Using your mover tool, place your 2nd eye where you would like it.

Congratulations! You now have made your own Ted E. Bear all on your own. Because we have each body part on separate layers you can situate them however your want. Using the deformation tool you can make any of the parts fuller or smaller by pulling out (or pushing in) the side nodes or top/bottom node. You can rotate any part to your liking and move the different parts around. Add a bow tie or hat if you like, perhaps a little vest. Have fun, after all he IS your creation!

When you are satisfied with your bear, go to your layer palette and hide layer1. Make sure you are on the top layer and merge visible. You can now tube your Ted E. Bear, save it as a gif, add a background to layer1, frame it or whatever you want. You will probably want to resize your creation before sending it to your groups, if they are using this tutorial as a lesson. If you aren't familiar with resizing and sharpening please view my resizing tutorial HERE.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I have creating it for you.
