When I was looking through all of the ads in the HUGE
newspaper on Thanksgiving Day, I saw that Mervyns was offering a Frosty
The Snowman Bobble Head. I thought perhaps I could make something similar
in PSP. While my Bobble Head Snowman is fashioned after Frosty there
are very few similarities. This tutorial is made entirely using PSP
and JASC's Animation Shop. I have selections for you, but of course
feel free to vector your own if you like. There is one vector that you
will need to do *grin*, but it isn't terribly difficult. The broom supplied
is one that I made using Mahogany's
Broom and Dustpan Tutorial. If you prefer to use another or make
your own that is fine. Remember my tutorials are only guidelines for
you to create your own image. Don't worry about "stepping on my
toes" and going off on your own ~~ that's what creativity is all
about.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04
and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate -
advanced level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with
a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't
make promises *S*
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
My selections ~~ You can get it HERE
Unzip into your selections folder. If you do not have a selections folder
then create one in either PSP or a separate folder called Selections
on your hard drive.
My broom tube (optional) ~~ You can get it HERE
Unzip into a folder so you can open in it in PSP.
Step 1:
Open a new image 400 x 400, 16 million colors, transparent background.
It is important that you use this size image or the selections won't
fit. Set your foreground to white and don't forget to save often.
Step 2:
Add a new layer and name it body. Go to Selections-->Load From Disk
and navigate to md-frosty_body.sel and open it.

Flood fill your selection. Go to Effects-->Noise-->Add
and enter 24, Uniform. Keep selected. (We will be applying the noise
with each selection.)

Step 3:
Go to Selections-->Float (Ctrl+F). Go to Effects-->3D-->Cutout
and apply the following settings:

Reapply the cutout, but change the vertical and horizontal
offsets to Minus 4. Deselect and save.
Step 4:
Go to your layer palette and activate layer 1. Add a new layer and name
it left leg. Go to Selections-->Load from Disk and open md-frosty_leftleg.sel.
Floodfill your selection, apply your noise, float (Ctrl+F) and apply
the cutout, but only use the Plus 4 settings. Deselect and Save.
Step 5:
Add a new layer and name it right leg. Go to Selections-->Load from
Disk and open md-frosty_rtleg.sel. Floodfill your selection, apply your
noise, float (Ctrl+F) and apply the cutout, but only use the Minus 4
settings. Deselect and Save.
Step 6:
Activate your body layer, add a new layer and name it head. Go to Selections-->Load
from Disk and open md-frosty_head.sel. Floodfill your selection, apply
your noise, float (Ctrl+F) and apply the cutout twice. First cutout
with the plus 4 settings and the second cutout with the minus 4 settings.
Deselect and Save.
Step 7:
Add a new layer and name it left arm. Go to Selections-->Load from
Disk, and open md-frosty_leftarm.sel. Flood fill your selection, apply
your noise, float (Ctrl+F) and apply the cutout using the Plus 4 settings.
Deselect and Save.
Step 8:
Add a new layer. It is not necessary to name this layer as we will be
merging it with your left arm in a minute. Change your foreground color
to black, background Null. Pick up your draw tool
,
set at freehand, width 1, antialias checked, vector UNchecked and draw
two lines on your hand to make fingers, similar to below.

Go to Effects-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and set
the radius at 2. Deselect. Go to your layer palette and hide all layers
except this layer and the left arm layer. Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge
Visible. Rename this layer left arm. Open your other layers and Save.
Step 9:
Add a new layer and name it right arm. Go to Selections-->Load from
Disk, and open md-frosty_rtarm.sel. Change your foreground color to
white. Flood fill your selection, apply your noise, float (Ctrl+F) and
apply the cutout using the Minus 4 settings. Deselect and Save.
Step 10:
Add a new layer and do the same as you did in Step 8, except draw your
fingers on the right hand. Don't forget to change your foreground color
back to black. Apply your gaussian blur, close all layers except the
right arm and this layer and merge visible. Rename your layer right
arm. Save.
Step 11:
Add a new layer and name it eyes. Make your foreground color Null and
your background color black. Pick up your preset shapes tool
set at Ellipse, antialias checked, retain style and vectors UNchecked.
Draw an oval for your eye. Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel and
apply the Round Preset. Go to Edit -->Copy (Ctrl+C) and then Edit-->Paste-->As
New Selection (Ctrl+E) and place the pasted eye next to your first eye.
Deselect and Save.

Step 12:
Here comes the fun part, we're going to vector his mouth. *winks* It
really isn't that hard, if I can do it you can too! On your preset shapes
tool options check create as vector. Because we are creating it as a
vector there is no need to add a new layer. After we draw our shape
and node edit it we will convert this to a raster layer. With your background
still set at black and your foreground null, draw a wide oval for his
mouth.

Activate your Object Selector tool
and click on Node Edit in your Tool Options.

Pull your two corner nodes up a bit and bring your
lower node down some to create a smile, similar to what I have below.
Remember no two smiles will look the same *S*.

When you are satisfied with your mouth go to Layers-->Convert
to Raster. Rename this layer mouth. Now, that wasn't so hard was it?
Add a new layer, flip your background and foreground so the background
is null and the foreground is black, pick up your draw tool and add
a line to each corner of his mouth.

Go to Effects-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and use
the same settings as before. Hide all layers except your mouth layer
and the lines layer and go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible.
Rename this layer mouth, open all layers and save.
Step 13:
Change your background color to a red (I used #C00000) activate your
preset shapes and UNcheck create as vector. Add a new layer and name
it nose. Draw a circle between your mouth and eyes for a nose. Go to
Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel and apply the following settings:

Have you been saving? We're almost done with our snowman,
but we need to add some decorations to him. I added a tophat and the
broom. If you would also like to add a scarf or anything else please
feel free to do so at this time. Place each decoration on it's own layer
so they will be easier to move around. I will show you how I did the
top hat and broom. Then we can take a short break and continue on to
the animation.
Step 14:
Add a new layer and name it tophat. Go to your preset shapes and scroll
down to JASC's Top Hat. Check Retain Style and draw out your hat on
top of his head.

Save.
Step 15:
If you are using the broom that I supplied then open it in PSP. Copy
your broom and paste it as a new layer (Ctrl+L) on your snowman. Go
to Images-->Flip. Using your deformation tool
turn your broom and move it into position by his right arm.

Save.
If you would like to get up and stretch your legs,
grab another cup of coffee or take a potty break, now is the time to
do it. We'll continue you on to saving different parts of our snowman
and the animation on the next page.
