The original Shape & Dimension tutorial was done
by Joe Cilinceon from New Dawn Micro. Joe is no longer going to be
updating his site and has graciously allowed me to redo two of his
tutorials using PSP7. The concept belongs to Joe, the presentation
is mine. Giving 3D shape and dimension can be done using layer blend
modes and gradient effects.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04
and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at a beginner level.
I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments
in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
Step 1:
Open a new image, 200x200, 16 million colors, transparent background.
Set your foreground color to Null and your background color to a color
of your choice. Rename your layer Symbol.
Step 2:
Pick up your Preset Shapes Tool,
,
set to Ellipse; antialias checked; retain style and create as vector
UNchecked. Holding down your shift key, start in the upper left corner
of your image (I started at coordinates 15,15) and draw a large circle.

Step 3:
Go to Selections-->Select All. Selections-->Float. Selections--Defloat.
You will now have your marching ants around your circle only. Keep
Selected.

Step 4:
Add a new layer, name it Sunburst Gradient. Go to Layers-->Arrange-->Send
to Bottom. Set your foreground color to White and your Background
Color to Black. On your Foreground Styles click on the arrow and select
Gradient.

Select Foreground/Background Gradient. Use the Sunburst
Gradient Style with the Horizontal set at 20, Vertical at 30.

Go to your layer palette, hide your Symbol layer
by clicking on the eye glasses. You will have a Red X next to that
layer. Make sure you are on the Sunburst Gradient layer (you should
see your marching ants) and flood fill with your gradient. Deselect
and Save.

Step 5:
Go to your layer palette and open your Symbol Layer. On the Symbol
Layer, set your blend mode to Overlay.

You could also try some of the other blend modes
to familiarize yourself with some of the effects possible. Here is
how mine looked with the overlay mode.

Step 6:
I wanted to save my circle as a gif. Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge
Visible. I always use the Gif Optimizer Wizard when saving as a .gif.
The main reason is I don't want those bumps to show up that happens
when you don't use the Wizard. In order to not have the bumps, when
you get to Step 3 in the Wizard, change it from Web-safe Colors to
No, choose the best colors.

This method can be used for other shaping effects,
than just spherical. You should experiment with it. It can also be
used with masking to achieve even more dramatic effects. The layer
properties method is the easiest way to add/change color on images
as well. We have just scratched the surface of all the possible combinations
of these powerful options. Have fun with this as it can give your
graphics the something extra that sets them apart from the others.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I thank Joe, once
again, for allowing me to keep his technique alive on the Internet.
