This tutorial
is written in and for PSP8.10 and assumes you have
a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate level,
however I do try to write all my tutorials so that
even the most novice beginner can understand it
and accomplish it.
YOU
WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP8.10
(30 day free trial) - You can get it HERE
A graphic for your globe ~~ I don't know
where the graphic that I used came from, so I cannot
offer it for download. Any graphic will suffice
though.
Remember, my tutorials are only guidelines
to help you accomplish a certain creation. Please
feel free to be inventive and take whatever liberties
you would like. I encourage each of you to do your
"own thing" and make your creation yours!

Creating the Base
Creating your own base will give you
much joy and self-satisfaction. It will take a lot of
work and concentration and I'm certainly not trying to
scare you off, however I do want you to realize that
it's not just a quick and easy process but once you accomplish
making the base you are going to feel like you can do
anything! In creating the base we are using the Selection
tool a lot. Remember, if you don't like how your selection
looks - Edit--->UNDO is your best friend! Don't be
afraid to use the undo feature as you want your base
to look great!
Step 1:
With your Globe image open, click on the Content layer
and add a new raster layer - name it base. Activate your
selection tool.

On your tool options palette choose
Ellipse for your selection type, Mode = Replace, Feather
= 0, Anti-alias checked. Click your mouse in the middle
of the bottom of your globe at coordinate x:150. You
can find your coordinates on your status toolbar on the
right hand side. Your y:coordinate may be different than
mine depending on how large your globe is.

Draw out a thin ellipse similar to
what I have below.

Step 2:
Go to Selections-->Invert. With your selection tool
active, change the selection type to rectangle and your
mode to remove on the tool options palette. Starting
on the far left corner of your ellipse, draw a rectangle
to the far right corner. Because you are in the remove
mode it will remove the back side of your ellipse to
make a base.

Go to Selections-->Invert. You have been saving haven't
you?
Step 3:
On your Materials Palette change your material to a Gradient.
I'm going to use the Metal Steel gradient that comes
with PSP8. Angle at 90°, Linear style - that's the
first button under styles.

Activate your paint bucket and flood
fill your base. Yes, you will see part of your globe
showing through the base, however we will fix that in
a little bit.
Step 4:
Go to Adjust-->Add/Remove Noise-->Add Noise.

Use the following settings. Gaussian,
noise at 50%, and Monochrome checked. Click OK.

You can deselect now either by going
to Selections-->Select None or Ctrl+D on your keyboard.
SAVE.
Step 5:
Activate your selection tool. Change your selection type
to ellipse and your mode to replace. Starting in the
top middle of your base, coordinate x:150, draw an ellipse
to the ends of your base. Press your delete key on your
keyboard.

Go to Selections-->Promote Selection
to Layer. The reason for doing this is so your globe
will be sitting in the middle of the base, with the base
in front and the promoted selection in the back of your
globe. I think it makes it look more real.

Step 6:
Activate your paint bucket and flood fill your ellipse.
Got to Image-->Mirror.

Step 7:
Go to Adjust-->Add/Remove Noise-->Add Noise. Change
the percentage of noise to 25%. Click OK.
Step 8:
Go to Adjust-->Brightness and Contrast-->Brightness/Contrast.
Change the Brightness to MINUS 20 and your Contrast at
0. Click OK.

Deselect
and save.
Step
9:
Activate your Eraser tool using the default settings.

To
get to the default settings, click on the Presets down
arrowhead on your tools option palette and click the
curved arrow on the side.

Go to your layer palette and click
on the Base layer. Go to Selections-->Select All.
Selections-->Float. Selections-->Defloat. Now click
on your Globe layer and erase the part of the globe that
is in the base. Deselect and Save.

Step 10:
As you can see there is still part of the back part of
the base showing through the content and that needs to
be erased. Click on the Content layer on your layer palette.
Go to Selections-->Select All. Selections-->Float.
Selections-->Defloat. Now click on your Promoted Selection
layer and erase that part of the base so your content
shows through. You can see how nicely the globe is sitting
in the base now.

Deselect and Save.
Step 11:
You can colorize your base if you would like to. This
is not necessary, of course, it is a personal preference.
To colorize your base click on the base layer. Go to
Adjust-->Hue and Saturation-->Colorize.

Depress the down arrowhead by your
Hue number and you will see a slider where your can see
the colors that you can choose from. This is new to PSP8
and I find it a wonderful addition.

Do the same for your Saturation and
you will see various saturation colors for the hue that
you have chosen. I ended up with a hue of 149 and a saturation
of 76. Click OK.

Now go to your Promoted Selection
(your back base), go to Adjust-->Hue and Saturation.
Before clicking on Colorize, hold down the shift key
when clicking on Colorize and the settings that you have
just used will automatically be selected overriding the
dialog box. This is another new addition to PSP8 that
can save you time.

Save your image and let's animate
our globe.
