I've always wanted to do a graphic having a painted look using only effects in PSP ~~ not any third party filters. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the different plugin filters that are available but we can't forget about the wonderful effects that JASC provides us in PSP. Don't worry, I'm not giving up on writing tutorials using filters, but I am going to start exploring more of what JASC has to offer.

This tutorial will be using Gaussian Blur, Noise, Motion Blur, Retouch Tool, and Texture Effects. Remember to SAVE your creation often! This tutorial is especially nice for those who have a Graphics Tablet. I have found that I have much more control using the pen than using the mouse. I also provide a lighting tip that I received from PSPMadeEZ, a group that I belong to.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*

JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
Flaming Pear's Super Blade Pro or Ulead Art Texture for the frame. (optional) **Review my Using Ulead tutorial if you are unfamiliar with this plugin.
A graphic ~~ I used the Squash Basket that I found at Free Stock Photos. You may use their graphics as long as you leave their name in the graphic and/or provide a link. Try to find a graphic with a central theme such as a floral arrangement or a still life. You may use the graphic provided below. Please right click on the graphic and save to your hard drive.

Step 1:
Open your graphic in PSP and make a copy of it (Shift+D). The main reason for making a copy is in case I want to use the image again and forget to change the name when I save *S* You can close out your original graphic. Go to Layers-->Promote to Layer.

Step 2:
Go to Layers-->Duplicate. Lower the Opacity on your copied layer to 34% and work on your original layer. The reason for lowering the opacity first is so you can see how the work you are doing on your Layer 1 will look when you merge the two layers together.

Step 3:
Go to Effects-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and set it at 6.75. Save.

Step 4:
Go to Effects-->Noise-->Add and enter 27 for the noise % with Uniform checked. Save.

Step 5:
Go to Effects-->Blur-->Motion Blur and use these settings:

Step 6:
Go Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible and save. Go to Layers-->Duplicate. Once again set the opacity on the copied layer, this time at 21, and work on the Merged Layer.

Pick up your Retouch Tool (it's the one that looks like a pointing hand), set it to Smudge with these settings.

Gently smudge each part of your graphic, working out and up or working out and down, depending on what part of the graphic you are doing. Below are several screenshots of my progress. I didn't do a lot of smudging with the background itself as the effects in Steps 3-5 did most of it. Remember to save often while you are smudging. Also, the Undo Feature in PSP7 comes in quite handy while doing this *winks*. I know I used it a lot!

Step 7:
When you are satisfied with your smudging, go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge Visible to merge your two layers. Save. I then wanted to add a little texture to the graphic so it would look more like it was on a canvas. Go to Effects-->Texture Effects-->Texture and apply these settings. The texture that I used was the terrain. Save.

Here's how it looked after the texture.

Step 8:
Click on the eye dropper tool and right-click on a predominate color in your graphic (I chose # D59655). Right clicking will add that color to the Background color box. Make your foreground color white. Click on your Gradients in your Foreground Style box and select #1 Foreground-Background. Choose Sunburst Gradient and using the crosshairs in the gradient box move to about where you want the light to be on your picture. I chose the upper left but not all the way to the corner.

Now add a new layer and flood fill with your gradient. Using the blend mode on your layer palette will create magic. Here are two examples of using the Blend Mode and/or lowering the opacity. First is using the Overlay Blend Mode.

and now adjusting the opacity to 79

I also found using the Soft Light created a very nice effect.

When you are satisfied with the way it looks merge your two layers together and let's add a frame.

Step 9:
Set your background color to white. Go to Images-->Add Border. Make sure that symmetrical is checked and add a border of 3. Using your magic wand (tolerance and feather set to 0) click on the white and add your favorite Blade Pro preset or Ulead Gold preset. Go to Selections-->Invert and apply the following cutout (Effects-->3D-->Cutout):

Apply the cutout once again, but this time use Minus 10 for the Vertical and Horizontal Offsets. Deselect and Save.

Step 10:
Change your background color to a complementary color from your graphic (I used #AB3814). Add a border of 20. Use your magic wand to select the border and apply the following Inner Bevel, (Effects-->3D-->InnerBevel). Deselect and save:

Step 11:
Add one more border of 8. Using your Magic Wand select the border and apply the same Blade Pro or Ulead preset. Apply the following Inner Bevel:

Keep Selected. Go to Selections-->Invert. Apply the following Drop Shadow (Effects--3D-->Drop Shadow), keep selected:

Go to Selections-->Invert and apply the Drop Shadow once again and we are done!

This example used the Overlay with the reduced opacity. I also made a different frame around the Soft Light graphic. The only things that were changed were the Inner Bevels. For the first Inner Bevel I used one that I discovered while doing Mahogany's Lord's Prayer Tutorial, see below:

And for the second InnerBevel I used the Frame Inner Bevel preset that comes with JASC. Here is my result using these with the Soft Light Graphic.

Mix and Match the Inner Bevels that I have used or make your own.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I have creating it for you.
