Halloween is fast approaching and better time for a Harvest Moon
to put in your landscaping backgrounds and with all the Halloween
tutorials that are popping up everywhere. This tutorial will use Fantastic
Machines Paint Engine and one of the images that JASC provides in
PSP7 (I'm not sure about the other versions.) If you are doing the
landscaping part of the tutorial you will also need VM Toolbox. VM
(Visual Manipulation) is authored by Mario Kingemann, it is a free
filter and he no longer has it available on his website. I have been
given permission to have this as a download for you but it is quite
large as it contains ALL of the VM filters. The download is 3.5 megs
and I did want you to be aware of that.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7 and assumes
you have a working knowledge of PSP. I am sure this can easily be
done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only
used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*
You will need:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it
HERE
Fantastic Machines PaintEngine Filter - You can get it HERE
**Make sure that you unzip into both your Plugins Folder and also
your C:/Windows Folder. You will NOT see the presets if you do not
have this in the Windows Folder!
VisMan ~~ You can get it HERE
**unzip into your Plugins Folder
JASC's landscape image ~~ If you downloaded PSP 7 from JASC you
will not have this image. If you bought the boxed version and have
the CD you will have the image. For those of you how have downloaded
you can go HERE and
get a lot of extra tubes, images, frames, etc. that are included in
the CD. I thank JASC for alerting me to this.
Step 1:
Open a new image 250 x 250, 16 million colors, transparent background.
Set your foreground to an orangish color. I used #DA4242. Flood
fill your image.
Step 2:
Go to Effects-->Plugins-->Fantastic Machines-->Paint Engine
and choose the Cracks preset. This will give it a kind of crater effect.
I applied the the Paint Engine 3 times.

Step 3:
Go to Effects-->Geometric Effects-->Circle and now you have
a nice round moon.
Step 4:
Go to Selections-->Select All (Ctrl+A) and Selections-->Float
(Ctrl+F) and apply the following Cutout (Effects-->3D-->Cutout)
Deselect and save.

You should now have this nice shadow effect around
your moon. Of course, feel free to play with the settings and change
the shadow if you wish.

We now have our Harvest Moon. That was pretty easy
wasn't it? I did resize my moon by 75% and then went to Effects-->Sharpen-->Sharpen.
I also tubed it for future use.
Now let's continue on the the landscaping part. In
your Paint Shop Pro Folder there is an Images folder that contains
a few things for JASC users AND they are still in layers format so
you can have fun playing!
Step 5:
Go to File-->Browser and open your PSP Browser. On the left side
of your browser are your folders. Navigate to C:-->Program Files-->JASC
Inc.-->Paint Shop Pro 7-->Images and open the landscape file.

Step 6:
The first thing you want to do is make a copy of this image (Shift+D)
and close the original. The main reason for making a copy is in case
I want to use the image again and forget to change the name when I
save *S* You will also notice that the image is quite large so let's
reduce it by 50%. Go to Images--Resize and use the settings I have
below:

Step 7:
Because we resized we need to sharpen the image so go to Effects-->Sharpen-->Sharpen.
As I said earlier, JASC was kind enough to have everything still in
layers on this image. Go to your layer palette and you will see what
I mean. This will also give you an idea of the different things that
can be done with using layers ~~ how to name them, opacity and blend
mode. I found this quite interesting.

Step 8:
I wanted the Sky layer to be a little darker so it would appear as
more twilight. Make your sky layer active. Now you can either lower
the Opacity of the sky even more than what is already there or you
can use the VM filter, which is what I did. Go to Effects-->Plugins-->VM
Toolbox-->Remove Gray. The only setting I changed was the boost
and I changed it to 66. Feel free to change it to whatever you think
is best for you.

Step 9:
Now it's time to add your moon. In your layer palette activate the
Foreground Shadow layer and add a new layer and name it Moon. Select
your tubes and find your moon that you tubed. I changed the size of
mine to 30 and applied it. Use your mover tool to position it to where
you would like your moon to show.
Step 10:
I then lowered the opacity of the moon to 76 so the clouds would kind
of show through the moon. I thought it made a nice effect.
Step 11:
Merge all your layers and add a frame or border of your choice and
you are done! You can also add any of the wonderful Halloween tubes
and/or creations that you have made to this landscape.
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as
I have enjoyed making it for you. I also thank all of my testers ~~
Elkay, Anneli, Beckie and Randie who keep me honest and make sure
that I have everything correct for the rest of you.
