I was inspired to do this tutorial by Johanna's PhotoImpact
'Bird Path Tutorial' and adapted with kind permission from Johanna.
You may view her PI tutorial here.
This dove is made totally using the teardrop preset
that comes with PSP7 except for the beak and eyeball. I also used
EyeCandy4000 Bevel Boss for the Inner Bevel, but I am sure if you
don't have it you could play around with the settings in PSP and come
up with one as good or maybe better.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04
and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate
- advanced level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with
a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't
make promises *S*

**unzip into your EyeCandy4000 Settings --> Bevel Boss
Step 1:
Open a new image 300 x 300, 16 million colors, transparent background.
Set your foreground color to black and flood fill your layer, this
is only so we can see what we're doing better. Don't forget to save
often.
Step 2:
Add a new layer. Set your foreground color to Null and your background
color to a cream color. I used #FDF2DB. Open your preset shapes and
scroll down and find your teardrop. In mine it is about 1/2 down the
list. Antialias checked, Create as vector unchecked.

Make your teardrop about 51x88 pixels in size, checking
it in the Status Bar on the lower left side of your window. Using
your mover tool place it approximately as I have below. Save.

Step 3:
Go to Images-->Rotate and rotate your teardrop 125 degrees, make
sure All layers is UNchecked.

This is the head.

Step 4:
Add a new layer and make another teardrop about twice the size of
the head (102x176). This is the body. Rotate the body 125 degrees
to the right and with your mover tool place the body with the head
so it shapes the dove. When you are satisfied with the shape of your
dove hide layer 1 and merge your dove head and body (Layers-->Merge-->Merge
Visible). Save.

Step 5:
Add a new layer. We are now going to do some shading to give the dove
some depth. Set your Foreground color to #BDB1B1 and set your airbrush
to the following settings.

Lightly brush the outer edge of your dove and a little
on the face to give it some cheeks as shown below:

Go to Effects-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur set at
2.98

Make sure the bottom layer is hidden and merge these
two layers and name them Dove Body. Unhide bottom layer and Save.
We're going to be doing a lot of shading so remember these steps.
Step 6:
Go to Effects-->Plugins-->EyeCandy4000-->Bevel Boss. Click
on settings and use the md-dove setting. Click OK.

Step 7:
Add a new layer and we will make the wing. Set your foreground to
Null and use the same color for the wing that we used for the body.
Make your teardrop the size of about 47x125. Using your deformation
tool move rotate it, move it into position and using the top right
corner pull it out just a bit as below.

Step 8:
Remember the shading we did in step 5? Okay, add a new layer and shade
your wing as below:

Don't forget the Gaussian blur. Hide layers 1 and
Dove Body and Merge the Wing and Wing Shading visible. Name it Wing
and save.
Step 9:
Apply the same Eye Candy 4000 Bevel Boss to your wing. Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop
Shadow and use the following settings:

Step 10:
Now our wing needs feathers. Make your foreground Null, same background
color as before, and add a new layer. This time make your teardrop
about 15x90 pixels, go to Images-->Rotate. Rotate your first feather
to the left at 45 degrees making sure all layers is UNchecked. Move
this layer under your Wings layer and with your mover tool move your
first feather into place. Save.

Step 11:
Go to Edit-->Copy (Ctrl+C) and copy your feather and Paste as a
new layer (Ctrl+L). You will want to place all of your feathers on
a new layer so they will be easier to move around and place into position.
Rotate your pasted layer left, 25 degrees and move it to the right
of your first feather. Your copied feather remains in your clipboard
until you clear it, so just keep pasting (Ctrl+L), rotating and moving
into place until you have all of your wing feathers. With each feather
rotation add 10 degrees to your previous amount. I ended up with 9
feathers looking like this.

Step 12:
Hide Layer 1, Dove Body, and Wing and merge all of your feather layers
visible. Add a new layer and do the shading on your feathers like
you did in Step 5.

Don't forget the Gaussian blur. Merge these two layers
(make sure all others are hidden) and name it wing feathers. Unhide
all layers and save.
Step 13:
Now we need to add some tail feathers, I only made four and I used
the deformation tool to rotate and move instead of the Image-->Rotate.
For some reason the deformation tool was easier for my tail feathers.
Make your foreground Null and background the same color as before.
Still using the teardrop preset make your first tail feather about
18x92 pixels. Copy and Paste as a new layer and place your tail feathers.
After you have your 4 tail feathers placed, hide all other layers
and merge visible. Add a new layer and do your shading as in Step
5 and the Gaussian blur. Merge these two layers and name it tail feathers.
Unhide all layers and save.

Step 14:
We're almost done but we do need an eye and a beak. Add a new layer
and name it eye1. Set your foreground color to black and your background
color to Null. Still using the teardrop shape (line width = 1) draw
a small teardrop on your doves head just above the cheek, like this.

Go to Images-->Rotate and rotate your eye1 by
90 degrees to the right.

Step 15:
Change your preset shapes to Ellipse and your foreground to Null and
your background to black. Add a new layer and name it Eye 2. Holding
your shift key down draw a circle in the middle of your eye outline.
Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner Bevel and apply the Round Preset
Inner Bevel. Save.

Step 16:
Add a new layer and name it beak. Change your background color to
a goldish color (I used #B49564) and change your preset shape to Triangle.
Draw your beak to about 14x51 pixels. Rotate your beak to the left
125 degrees and move your beak layer under your Dove Body layer. With
your mover tool place your beak. Save.

Step 17:
You can tube your dove for future use, add an olive branch, more shading,
drop shadows or just leave him on a background. To tube your dove
hide layer 1 and merge all layers visible. With your magic wand click
on the blank area around your dove, go to Selections-->Invert,
Copy your dove (Ctrl+C) and Paste as a New Image (Ctrl+V). Go to Files-->Export-->Picture
Tube and name your dove and you have your tube.
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as
I have creating it for you.
