This tutorial
is written, by request, for
George. George does his own
photography and has been making
a lot of seamless tiles using
his own work ~~ smiles ~~ and
wanted to know how to use one
of his patterns in a text and
make it 3D. You may visit George's
site HERE.
We will be
using the Inner Bevel and Drop
Shadow in PSP's 3D Effects and
also saving your text as a gif
using Animation Shop.
My tutorials are
only guidelines to help you
accomplish a certain creation.
Please feel free to be inventive
and take whatever liberties
you would like. I encourage
each of you to do your "own
thing" and make your creation
yours! Your finished creation
is yours to do with as you please.
Screenshots are
resized and compressed for faster
loading. Don't forget to SAVE
your work often.
This tutorial
is written in and for PSP Version
7.04 and assumes you have a
working knowledge of PSP at
a beginners level. I am sure
this can easily be done in Version
6 with a few adjustments in
paths but I have only used Version
7 so I can't make promises *S*
FOR THIS TUTORIAL
YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)-
You can get it HERE
A Pattern ~~ Any seamless pattern
or tile that you would like
for your text. I used a pattern
made by George. If you would
like to use his pattern, right
click on the graphic and save
to your hard drive.

Step 1:
Open a new image, 500x300, 16
million colors, transparent
background. This is quite large
so you can see what you are
doing. We will be cropping your
text later.
Step 2:
Open the pattern that you would
like to use, minimize it on
your work area. Set your foreground
styles to Null and your background
styles to Pattern.
.
When you open your pattern,
click the arrow in the edit
box and scroll to your pattern.

Click OK and your
Color Palette should look like
this.

Step 3:
Activate your text tool,
,
and choose the Font you would
like to use. I suggest a wide,
bold font and am using Bookman
Old Style. I set my size to
60, you choose the size that
you prefer. I have Bold checked,
center alignment; floating and
antialias checked. Type in your
text and click OK.

Deselect
(Ctrl+D) and save.
Step 4:
Go to Effects-->3D-->Inner
Bevel and apply the following
settings:

Step 5:
Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop
Shadow and apply the following
settings. Make sure that your
color is set to White.

Offsets=1; Opacity=70; Blur=1;
Color=White
Step 6:
Go to Selections-->Select
All. Selections-->Float.
You will now have marching ants
around your text. Go to Layers-->Add
New Raster Layer. Keep your
text selected. Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop
Shadow. Change the Opacity to
100 and the Color to Black.

Deselect
and Save. This is how your text
should now look.

Step 7:
Go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge
Visible. There is a lot of blank
area around your text that you
will want to crop out. Activate
your crop tool,
,
and draw a rectangle around
your text.

To apply
you can either double click
on your image or go to your
tool option box and click Crop
Image.

Save your
text and remember what folder
you saved it in. ~smiles~ We
want to save this as a gif,
however we added a drop shadow
and the gif optimizer in PSP
will accentuate that drop shadow.
We will use JASC Animation Shop
to save our gif. To open AS,
click on the film strip on your
tool bar, or go to File-->Launch
JASC Software Products-->Launch
Animation Shop.
Step 8:
Go to File-->Open to open
your text in AS. Your dialog
box will probably be asking
for a .gif extension. In the
Files of type, scroll to Paint
Shop Pro Image. Navigate to
the folder you have saved your
text in and click open.

Step 9:
Go to File-->Save and save
your image as a gif. AS will
automatically bring up your
Wizard. Click on Customize.

These are
the settings I used in Colors.

Click on
the Partial Transparency tab.
I used the following settings.

Click OK.
Click Next. You will then get
this pop up that will show you
the Optimization Progress. Click
Next.

Your next
pop up will show you a preview
of your original graphic and
the optimized graphic. Click
Next.

This pop
up will show you how big your
file size is and how long it
will take to download using
different modems. Click Finish
and you are done!

I hope you have
enjoyed this tutorial as much
as I did creating it for you.
I would like to thank
my testers from my PSP_Dynasty
group.
